"The Phat 5" nickname was created from the P-H-A-T acronym that means (Producing History At the Tournament) for the 5 "Greatest" college basketball programs of All-Time.
"The Phat 5" of College Basketball at 500 Report Volume #5 is dedicated to Mike Krzyzewski. Coach Krzyzewski, nicknamed "Special K" or "Coach K," played his college basketball at West Point and was coached by the legendary Bob Knight, who is now the new NCAA All-Time winningest coach. He returned to West Point and guided the Black Knights from 1976-80 where he compiled a 73-59 record. In 1981 he became coach at Duke University. During his 25 1/2 seasons at Duke he has won three NCAA Championships (1991,1992,2001), 10 Final Four appearances, 10 regular-season ACC Championships and nine ACC Tournament Championships. Coach K ranks first All-Time with 66 NCAA Tournament wins (Dean Smith is second with 65). He has 765 career wins (10th All-Time). Coach K is one of the five best college basketball coaches in history. He was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame on October 5, 2001.

Randolph Morris scored a career high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds vs. Eastern Kentucky (12/30). Morris is ready for regular-season SEC play starting Saturday 1/06 vs. Ole Miss. Tyler Hansbrough has been steady all-season, he's coming off a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with 15 points in a return home win vs. St. Louis (12/22). Hansbrough continues to be a favorite for the John R. Wooden Award. Arron Afflalo equaled a career-high with 27 points and dished out eight assists as he played the best all-around game of his three-year career at UCLA. Afflalo like Hansbrough will be a finalists for Player of the Year. Brandon Rush is back and had one of his best games of the season vs. Rhode Island (12/30) scoring 19 points with six rebounds. Josh McRoberts had a double-double vs. a tough Gonzaga squad scoring 11 points and snatching 11 boards. He also made five assists in the win. He had his best game of the season vs. San Jose St. (12/31) scoring 15 points and grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds in the win. McRoberts recorded his career-high of 21 points vs. Temple (01/02) to secure another win for Duke.
Kentucky 10-3 unranked in both polls, the "Boyz of Lexington" are on a six-game win streak. The Wildcats beat U-Mass (12/22) 82-68 with Joe Crawford, Ramel Bradley and Randolph Morris each scoring 14 points for the victory. U-Mass head coach Travis Ford is a former player at Kentucky during the Rick Pitino era. The Cats defeated Eastern Kentucky this past Saturday (12/30) 78-65. Randoph Morris scored a career-high 25 points for UK. Kentucky has one more tune-up game against the Houston Cougars (01/03) before the start of SEC regular-season play. The next five games are all vs. SEC foes.

UNC out-muscled St. Louis on the road (12/22) 69-48 as Tyler Hansborough returned to his home-town and collected a career-high 13 rebounds and 15 points for the Heels. Hansborough, Brandan Wright, and Wayne Ellington scored a combined 49 points during the 87-48 win over Rutgers (12/28). Carolina defeated Dayton this past Sunday (12/31) 81-51 shooting 54 percent from the field as they were the hi-fyers over the Flyers. UNC has one more game vs. Penn (01/03) before they start ACC regular-season action.

UCLA, 13-0, ranked #1 by the new ESPN/USA Today and AP polls for the fifth straight week. The Bruins were the first of "The Phat 5" to start Conference play. UCLA dominated Michigan and gave the Wolverines a 92-55 beating (12/23). A. Afflalo, D. Collison, L. Moute, and J. Shipp scored a combined 63 outscoring the entire Michigan team. The Bruins barely held on to win vs. Washington St. (12/28) 55-52. UCLA hosted the #13 ranked Washington Huskies this past Sunday (12/31) and won going away 96-74. Arron Afflalo scored a career high with 27 points and delivered eight assists. The 96 points is the largest out-put for the Bruins this season. The Bruins will play their next three games on the road in PAC-10 action.

Chalmers again scored 22 points for the Jayhawks being the only player to score in double-figures. KU finished 2006 with a win over Rhode Island (12/30) 80-69.
