How Basketball Came To Be...
In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a minister on the faculty of a college for YMCA professionals (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto an 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, so balls scored into the basket had to be poked out with a long dowel each time. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals.

2007 MEAC Basketball Tournament Unveils This Year’s Theme to Jam On and Off Court
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) October 14, 2006 -- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced today the theme of this year’s 2007 basketball tournament at the Tip-Off Basketball luncheon held at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC. Dr. Dennis Thomas, MEAC Commissioner, unveiled the “United We Jam” theme on a 24” x 36” poster to luncheon attendees.
The themeline holds a double meaning for both on and off the court play.
“We chose a themeline that would encapsulate the nostalgia alumni feel when they’re reunited with their classmates,” said Thomas. “Here are eleven of the finest universities in the country uniting for a homecoming. That provides an atmosphere where students, alumni and fans can have fun because they’re sharing the excitement of MEAC basketball and all the entertainment events surrounding the tournament.”
The theme, developed by Raleigh-based marketing firm Brogan & Partners, will be prominently displayed in all advertising, plus electronic and collateral materials developed for the tournament. “United We Jam” also refers to the energy surrounding the additional events associated with the tournament beyond the games.
Last year’s tournament held in Raleigh/Wake County was a success, with attendance growing 50% over the prior year’s tournament. More than 22,500 people attended the tournament games, with additional attendance at related events such as concerts, comedy shows, career day, the Tom Joyner Sky Show and Showtime at the Apollo.
About the MEAC Basketball Tournament
The MEAC is a Division I basketball program comprised of 11 historically black colleges and universities located across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman College, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and South Carolina State University.
The men’s and women’s basketball tournament will be played in Raleigh/Wake County at least through 2008. Both the men’s and women’s tournament winner receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Tournament. The first game of the 2007 MEAC Basketball Tournament tips off Tuesday, March 6, and the championship games are played on Saturday, March 10.
